Exhale.

To breathe out.

To release.

To let go.

There are days I can feel that I’m holding my breath.

Waiting for news.

Waiting for answers.

Waiting for my son to fall off the furniture.

And, when the news is good or the answer comes or he lands on something soft, I breathe relief.

But, what about the times the email contains more worries, the answers aren’t obvious, and we’re headed to the ER, again?

Do I just keep holding my breath, hoping I don’t turn blue?

Or do I release it all anyway?

Because controlling my breath does not control the situation.

I can’t change the outcome by refusing to accept it.

When I’m holding my breath….

I can’t laugh so I hold back joy.

I can’t speak so I hold back words of encouragement.

I can’t relax so I hold back peace.

But when I let them go….

Joy comes even in hard times.

Words of life are free to flow.

Peace can fill the place my breath once held.

  1. “Because controlling my breath does not control the situation.”
    So. Very. True.
And yet I hold my breath way too certain that it will help?!
    Thank you for your words!

  2. This is beautiful and so true! We need to exhale so that we can INHALE the beauty and peace that God offers us! We can’t experience joy if we are holding everything in!

  3. “Because controlling my breath does not control the situation. I can’t change the outcome by refusing to accept it.” Amen! Learning this–and living it–is difficult but SO important.

  4. Wow… all of this was so good – but that last line… “Peace can fill the place my breath once held.” Amen! We rob ourselves and everyone around us when we forget to let go… to exhale… (to trust, anyway!) Love this!
